David DuBoisDavid L. DuBois, PhD, is a professor in the Division of Community Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he serves as Associate Dean for Research and Coordinator of the Faculty Mentoring Program in the School of Public Health and as an Associate Director of the Institute for Health Policy and Research. Dr. DuBois received his doctorate in clinical-community psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. DuBois’ research examines the contribution of protective factors -- particularly self-esteem and mentoring relationships -- to resilience and holistic positive development and on translating knowledge in this area to the design of effective youth programs and policies. He is lead author of the most widely cited meta-analysis of evaluations of youth mentoring program effectiveness and is lead or co-lead of several randomized control evaluations of youth mentoring programs and practices, including a currently ongoing multi-site trial of the Big Brothers Big Sisters community-based mentoring program for crime and delinquency prevention. He is lead co-editor of the award-winning Handbook of Youth Mentoring (Sage Publications, 2nd edition), chair of the Research Board for the National Mentoring Resource Center and the Research Advisory Council of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of America, and a former Big Brother in the BBBS program.

Onur SultanOnur Sultan serves as the Director of Research at Beyond the Horizon ISSG, a forward-thinking think-and-do tank headquartered in Brussels. He is distinguished by his academic credentials, holding a master’s degree in political science from the prestigious US Naval Postgraduate School, and is about to complete his PhD in Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp. From 2020 to 2022, he coordinated the EDUC8 – Educate to Build Resilience Project, an initiative dedicated to fostering resilience among youth against societal polarization. Since March 2022, he has been leading the Mentor+ Project, an ambitious endeavor aimed at developing a mentoring program accompanied by a comprehensive handbook, mentor’s training and application designed to prevent juvenile offending. Onur is not only a strategist but also a practitioner of change, embodying the role of a mentor. He passionately advocates for volunteer mentoring as a potent remedy for many contemporary societal challenges, including polarization, racism, poverty, and various forms of discrimination. His work exemplifies a deep commitment to leveraging education and mentorship as tools for social transformation and resilience.

Cristina de CarvalhoWorking in the field of criminal justice and juvenile justice since 1983 she was part of the first team of probation officer in Portugal. Assured functions as a team coordinator, trainer, lecturer and speaker at various seminars, workshops and congresses and has taken part in national and European projects and various working groups aimed at creating and implementing new intervention methodologies, both in the area of criminal justice and juvenile justice.
Presently, as probation officer senior, integrates staff in the Lisbon Technical Support Department of the General-Directorate of Reintegration and Prison Services, DGRSP, Lisbon, where she is responsible for implementing and monitoring social reintegration responses and for the technical supervision of educational measures in the community. She has focused her professional experience and academic training on promoting the motivation of offenders to comply with the measures, the quality of the technical-offender relationship and the well-being of professionals working in this area.
